Patience & Sabr

“Allah surely loves those who are the Sabireen (patient).”

This life is a constant struggle between hardships and ease. Everything bestowed by Allah should be considered a blessing and whether good or evil, it is for our own benefit. Thus the one who remains patient through all the decrees of Allah is awarded with great benefits. Sabr is obligatory in all situations of happiness and sorrow.

What does patience literally means? To stay thankful to Allah and have utmost faith in his mercy even in the hardest times is the true essence of patience. The affliction may be a trial from Allah to check your faith and the one who stays positive is rewarded. It may also be a punishment from Allah because of your sins committed in the past. The best measure in this case would be to ask for Allah’s repentance and make an oath to stay away from all sinful acts. In the end, Allah may also cause affliction to test the patience of His creation. Anyone who shows annoyance and disrespects God during his bad times further invokes the wrath of Allah upon himself. Allah, the merciful appreciates the patient human beings in Quran Majeed via these words,

“And certainly, we shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Saabireen (the patient ones). Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: “Inna lillaahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raaji’un (Verily to Allah we belong and verily, to Him we shall return). They are those on whom are the Salawaat (i.e. who are blessed and will be forgiven) from their Lord, and (they are those who) receive His Mercy, and it is they who are the guided-ones.”

Istaghfaar – The Cardinal Supplication

Patience is one of the best qualities a believer can have. It is a noble characteristic of people of Paradise and Allah has highlighted their status in the Quran.

“Peace unto you for that you persevered in patience! Now how excellent is the final abode”.

This simply states that the final destination of a patient individual is Jannat. Apart from this, Allah has promised the following benefits in Holy Quran for all those who remain positive during adverse times.

  • ONLY BELIEVERS ARE THE ONE WHO CAN ENJOY PATIENCE

“And endure patiently; your patience is not but from Allah.” (16:127)

  • PATIENCE BRINGS SUCCESS AND PROSPERITY

“O you, who believe! Endure and be more patient, and guard your territory by stationing army units permanently at the places from where the enemy can attack you, and fear Allah, so that you may be successful.” (3:200)

  • THE REWARD IS SEVERAL FOLDS

“These will be given their reward twice over, because they are patient, and repel evil with good, and spend out of what We have provided them.” (28:54)

In another instance, Allah says,

“Those who patiently persevere will truly receive a reward without measure”.

  • IT EARNS YOU ALLAH’S COMPANIONSHIP

“And be patient. Surely, Allah is with those who are patient.” (8:46)

The message is pretty clear that there is no greater gift than patience. In fact, it is a quality which draws all other acts of righteousness. Although difficult to achieve for it is really challenging to stay contended during sufferings, once achieved then it becomes an affair of great resolution. It is the utmost measure to attain Allah’s love and a special status among all the believers. Sabar is actually an indication of faith and reflect true reliance upon Allah.

Istikhara – The ultimate solution under the guidance of Allah

Sabar remains the potential power for all Muslims to fight against catastrophes and is a source of victory, success and energy. It is an armor that protects from the evilness of Shaitaan and glorifies the personality of an individual. It gives us the courage to face problems and implore Allah for guidance, for He is the only one who can guide the right path. Despite all the provocations, it is patience that prevents a believer from committing sin and keeps him brave during hardships. It is the ability to embrace moral virtues and is without a doubt the most indispensable solution to all our problems.

Only the lives that are illuminated with the light of patience can guide others towards new horizons and bring peace to this world. The one who thanks Allah and remains grateful to Him at all times is a true Muslim and is blessed with the pleasures of both the worlds in the long run. So whenever evil engulfs you and you wish to do anything other than Sabar, remember this saying of Allah in Surah Al-Zumar,

“Only those who are patient shall receive their reward in full, without reckoning.”

Thus in the light of the knowledge imparted above, we should all make dua to our Lord to make us from those who remain patient in hardships and thank Him for his innumerable blessings. We should ask Him to direct our hearts towards His obedience and make us stand in the line of those who were blessed with Jannat. Amen.
