I am sure a typical Muslim will agree that elders in our family used to hardly click pictures. If you go around some old pictures in your house, you will hardly find pictures taken by your parents or grandparents. The only pictures one might see, is of a family gathering and almost all pictures had many in one frame. Almost all people in those pictures were in their usual dresses. Shall we say that our parents weren’t obsessed with how they looked? More than exterior beauty what mattered to them was interior beauty. I am sure we remember our elders remembering their relatives as good or bad human beings but hardly by their looks.
I had a chance to listen to an interview with a man who was possessed by a Muslim jin. Out of many questions, one specific question was, if shayateen really get attracted towards a living picture or a statue? The jin replied, ‘pictures or idols of living beings attract us as if they have some magnetic force in them.’ I was amused knowing that shayateen are attracted towards any picture or a statue of living being with strong attractive forces.
Let us now remember any historical story as mentioned in Quran or shared by our Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him), in which you have ever come across any pictures or any reference to them? Don’t you think if pictures of living things were so dear to Allah, then He would have incorporated that in Quran or had asked to erect them in the places of worship? Drawings (in today’s context taking pictures) were so disliked By Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon Him), that even to this day we don’t have a single picture of Him or any other prophet, or the great companions of our Beloved Prophet, and other pious peoples. Even presently, we have come across some Islamic scholars who don’t prefer taking pictures or even allowing there lectures to be recorded. Don’t you think there might be a reason behind it?
There is no doubt that if it was a permissible act, great craftsman and artists had painted portraits of some amazing personalities of Islamic history and hanged them on city walls to show supremacy and power of Islam.
Have you ever asked some simple question to yourself:
- When Allah chooses not to have any pictures in Quran or in His house in Mecca or in any place of worship and our Beloved Prophet (Peace be upon Him) disliked any picture depicting real beings, why do you still find yourself addicted to taking photos & selfies?
- When shayateen get attracted to pictures, don’t you think they are always around you, as your phone is loaded with them?
- Don’t you think every time when you browse your phonebook finding pictures on WhatsApp or Facebook, no doubt jinn/shayateen might stand right next to you playing with your mind!!!

- We have heard our elders saying, ‘One who takes a lot of pictures loses the glow & noor on his/her face!’ Isn’t it true? Why do we feel we don’t look good when we see at our own pictures? Is it not true that we take pictures to find that attraction on our face which others can praise? Instead, we should leave it to Allah who can make our face radiant with noor, which not only impresses peoples’ sight but it will touch their heart as well.
